These are some quotes about Invisible Man that may help provide some inspiration.
'I am invisible, understand, simply because people refuse to see me.'
From his underground cell, illuminated by 1,369 stolen light bulbs, listening to Louis Armstrong ‘bend that military instrument into a beam of lyrical sound’, Ellison’s unnamed narrator tells the story of invisibility…
‘…I recall the sudden arpeggios of laughter lilting across the tender, springtime grass — gay-welling, far floating, fluent, spontaneous…’
‘I could feel the words forming themselves, slowly falling into place. The light seemed to boil opalescently, like liquid soap shaken gently in a bottle.’
‘Was this all that would be recorded? Was this the only history of the times, a mood blared by trumpets, trombones, saxophones and drums, a song with turgid, inadequate words? My mind flowed … I walked in feverish isolation.’
Impassioned, lyrical, angry and visceral, Invisible Man goes beyond the compelling story of an individual to evoke the lives of millions of African-Americans with an urgency that has potent relevance today.
‘In an extraordinary imaginative leap, [Ellison] hit upon a single word for the different yet shared condition of African Americans, Americans, and, for that matter, the human individual in the twentieth century, and beyond’ – John Callahan
